A weep at a cover edge, a whistle from the intake flange or an oil mist that appears after a long drive are all found here.
Gaskets are matched to the component casting and to the engine code. A gasket with the wrong port shape restricts flow or leaves a vacuum leak that the module reads as a lean condition, and a pan gasket that is one bolt pattern off will weep from the first heat cycle. Modern engines increasingly use formed-in-place seals, and converting to a gasket requires the correct surface preparation.
Listings state the position and whether the fasteners and seals are included. Clean both surfaces and check for distortion before fitting; a warped cover will leak with any gasket.
