Buying guide: Gaskets & Seals

This group covers cylinder head gaskets, engine gasket sets, cover and pan gaskets, and the seals and O-rings that keep oil, coolant and pressure where they belong.

Sealing failures are diagnosed by what leaks and where. Oil at the bell housing points to a rear main seal; coolant at the head-to-block joint points to the head gasket; a fine mist along a cover edge is usually a gasket that has hardened rather than a loose bolt. Torque sequence and surface preparation decide whether a new gasket lasts, and reusing a torque-to-yield head bolt is the most common reason a fresh head gasket fails inside a thousand miles.

Multi-layer steel head gaskets are thickness-specific because they set compression ratio and piston-to-valve clearance. Our listings state the thickness and the engine code they are cut for, and complete sets include the intake, exhaust and valve cover gaskets rather than only the head.
