Buying guide: Oil System

Low oil pressure at idle, a pump that howls when cold, or a pan that weeps at the gasket all lead here.

Oil pumps are clearanced to the engine and are not interchangeable across displacement even when the bolt pattern matches. A pickup tube that sits too close to the pan floor starves the pump under braking; one that sits too high does the same on hard cornering. On engines with a wet-belt design, a failed belt sheds material that blocks the pickup and takes the bearings shortly afterwards.

Each listing states whether the pan includes a drain plug and gasket, whether the pump is a complete assembly with the pickup, and which engine codes it covers. Check the dipstick tube length against the original when replacing a pan on a conversion or a later build.
