Buying guide: Camshafts & Timing

Nothing in the engine fails more quietly, and nothing fails more expensively when it does.

A stretched chain retards cam timing and produces a cold-start rattle that fades as oil pressure rises. A worn guide allows the chain to contact the cover and leaves metal in the oil. A sticking VVT solenoid holds the phaser at full advance and turns a smooth idle into a rough one with no obvious mechanical noise. Because the chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets wear as a set, replacing only the chain is the most common cause of a repeat repair.

Timing components are matched to the engine code and, on interference engines, to the exact cam and crank sprocket pair. Our kits include the guides and tensioner for that reason, and each listing states whether the engine is interference or free-running.
