A whine in four-wheel drive, a delay before engagement or a fluid leak at the case halves points here.
Transfer cases are matched to the transmission output, the vehicle's drivetrain and the control strategy — manual lever, electric shift or automatic on-demand. A case from a different strategy will bolt up and will not engage correctly, because the module is looking for a motor it cannot find. Chain stretch is the most common internal failure and produces a rattle that only appears under load in four-wheel drive.
Listings state the shift type, the input spline count and the vehicle configurations covered. Always check the fluid specification: the wrong fluid destroys the clutch packs in an on-demand case.
