A whine that rises with road speed, a clunk when selecting drive or a chatter on tight turns is the differential talking.
Ring and pinion sets are matched as a pair and by ratio, and the ratio has to match the calibration or the speedometer and shift points will be wrong. Carrier bearings and pinion depth shims are not optional consumables: a differential rebuilt without resetting pinion depth will howl from the first mile. Limited-slip units additionally require the correct friction modifier.
Listings state the ratio, the ring gear diameter and whether the set is for an open or a limited-slip carrier. Confirm the axle code from the door label or the build sheet before ordering a ratio change.
